Built for the cellar, not the shelf. Wicker wine crates like this one were workhorses of early 20th century wine merchants and country houses around France, designed to cushion and carry bottles through the kind of daily handling that would have shattered unprotected glass.
This one dates to around 1910 to 1920, and the construction reflects that era's approach to utility: tight, considered weaving with a solidity that holds up well over a century later. It was made to do a job, and it still could.
The wicker has aged to a warm, honeyed tone, with the kind of surface variation that only comes with genuine use and time. There are no breaks or losses to the structure.
Works well as a functional wine holder, a kitchen or bar accent, or simply as a textural piece on a sideboard or low shelf. The kind of object that looks like it belongs wherever you put it.
