Few decorative finishes from the Victorian era have aged quite as gracefully as bird's eye maple scumble, and this pine dressing chest is a fine example of why.
Dating to around 1870, it was crafted at a time when skilled painters used scumbling techniques to mimic the look of expensive figured maple on more humble pine. This was genuinely artful work, not a shortcut, and the result here is warm, detailed, and still remarkably intact after more than 150 years.
The mirror sits above a well-proportioned chest of drawers that is as practical today as it was in a Victorian bedroom. The original finish carries a gentle patina that cannot be replicated, and any minor wear it has picked up along the way only adds to the sense that this piece has had a real life.
It looks equally at home in a period property or as a characterful contrast in a more contemporary space.
