In Scotland, these ceramic spaniels were known as "Wally Dugs," and for good reason, they were the heartbeat of the Victorian mantelpiece, a tradition passed down through generations of parlours and drawing rooms. This style of Staffordshire spaniel was produced in great numbers during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, beloved for their expressive faces and decorative warmth. Each figure is hand-painted with gilded collars and chains, and one carries a small chip to the base, visible in the photos, an honest mark of over a century of mantelpiece life. They feel equally at home flanking a modern fireplace or anchoring a shelf of collected curiosities.
