Giltwood and gesso mirrors like this one were the Victorians at their most theatrical. Made somewhere between 1860 and 1890, it draws on the Rococo Revival style that swept through fashionable interiors of the period, all scrolling curves, floral flourishes, and that warm, layered gilding that only comes with age.
The gesso work is beautifully detailed, and the gilt has developed the kind of soft, uneven patina that no reproduction can fake. There's gentle wear consistent with its age, which honestly just adds to the charm.
Hang it in a hallway, above a fireplace, or anywhere that could use a little Victorian drama.
