Stamped for James Walsh, Spirit Merchant of Keighley, this stoneware flagon carries the weight of a real Victorian trade in every inch of its fired clay. Merchants ordered these vessels by the dozen, branded and built to last, and Walsh's name remains crisp after more than a century.

Production almost certainly came from one of the era's great pottery houses, Doulton Lambeth or Price Bristol being the most likely candidates, both prolific suppliers to the spirit trade across northern England.

The classic two-tone salt glaze, honey-brown over cream, is clean and well-preserved, with only minor age wear that speaks honestly to its working life.

Display it on a shelf, a bar cart, or alongside other English stoneware, and it holds the room without trying.
