Signed by TR Sanderson and painted around 1900, this oil-on-canvas captures a brooding Highland loch scene complete with a castle at the water's edge and wide, atmospheric skies. It's exactly the kind of romantic Scottish landscape that was at the height of fashion during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, when artists like Francis E. Jamieson and William Scott Myles built entire careers on this subject matter.

Sanderson isn't a widely documented name, but the brushwork here is confident and the composition is well-handled. Whether a regional painter or someone working outside the main exhibition circuit, the quality of the work stands on its own.

It comes in its original frame, which adds considerable weight and presence to the piece. There's age-related wear throughout, as you'd expect from something over a century old, and it only adds to the sense that this is the real thing.

Hang it in a study, a library, or anywhere that suits a bit of quiet drama. It would sit comfortably alongside a collection of British or Scottish landscape art, or hold its own as a standalone piece.
