An antique cast iron fireback bearing the inscription “PAX,” the Latin word for peace, and the cast date 1679. The relief depicts two cherubic figures gathered around a central vessel beneath a winged angelic figure, all framed by an ornate architectural border and decorative cresting.

Traditionally used to protect the masonry at the back of a fireplace while reflecting heat into the room, antique firebacks are now highly sought after as sculptural architectural accents. Whether displayed within a fireplace surround or mounted as wall art, they bring centuries of character and history to an interior.

Rich in patina and beautifully weathered with age, this substantial piece showcases the texture and craftsmanship that make antique hearth furnishings so desirable. The reverse retains its original aged iron surface, further enhancing its authenticity and historic appeal.
